The Group was created in 2003 through the merger of Elektrobau Mulfingen (ebm), Papst Motoren, and Motoren Ventilatoren Landshut (MVL) and has since grown into a technology partner to OEMs worldwide—pairing materials, aerodynamics, motor control, and embedded electronics to deliver high efficiency, low noise, and long-life operation across a portfolio of ~20,000 products.
The company’s hallmark is the external-rotor motor—a compact architecture that integrates the rotor directly with the fan hub, enabling slim axial and centrifugal designs with excellent torque density and thermal behavior. Building on this foundation, ebm-papst has consistently led the transition from legacy AC drives to EC technology, embedding control electronics for variable speed, bus networking, and intelligent regulation (pressure, temperature, volumetric flow), all while shrinking wiring complexity and elevating reliability.
1963–1974 (Founding & EC roots). Gerhard Sturm, together with Heinz and Günther Ziehl, founded Elektrobau Mulfingen to build small fans—already developing external-rotor motors before the formal launch. By 1965, the team had compact, brushless DC concepts; by 1974, the first fans in EC technology were in place, initially for computer cooling then cleanrooms and residential ventilation.
1992–2003 (Expansion & merger). ebm acquired Papst Motoren (St. Georgen) in 1992, built out Shanghai operations by 1996, and took over Alcatel’s Landshut plant in 2000 (becoming MVL). In 2003, the brands unified as ebm-papst Mulfingen / St. Georgen / Landshut, with Elektrobau Mulfingen as parent.
2007–2010 (Scale & GreenTech). Revenue exceeded €1 billion in 2007; an energy-autonomous factory in Mulfingen-Hollenbach came online in 2008. In 2010, the GreenTech strategy committed that each new product must be more ecologically and economically efficient than its predecessor.
2013–2019 (Portfolio & logistics). Acquisition of Zeitlauf (gearboxes) in 2013 integrated gearing know-how. Innovations followed: FlowGrid guide grilles (2014) for aero-acoustics; a major Hollenbach dispatch center (2017); LAE (protective grids) acquisition (2017); and a new Xi’an production site (2019).
2022–2025 (Realignment & legal form). The Group exited Russia in 2022, rebalanced away from new automotive programs, and focused on heat pumps and cloud/datacenter cooling. A new Telford, Tennessee plant opened in 2022. In spring 2023, ebm-papst consolidated four Shanghai sites into a single 33,000 m² HQ. On April 1, 2025, the parent became Elektrobau Mulfingen GmbH & Co. KGaA.
The brand also partnered with Mercedes-AMG Petronas (2014–2015) to supply top-mounted cooling for F1 cars—showcasing compact, high-performance thermal control under extreme conditions.
